Y2K Preparedness at Japanese Electric Power Companies

1. FEPC Member Company Y2K Response Measures

JapanÕs electric power companies are aware of the critical nature of Y2K compliance and have had individual compliance programs in place since 1996. As of today, 12 November 1999 compliance programs and remedial action have been completed.

Electric power company computer systems can be separated into two major categories: business systems that handle billing and accounting; and control systems that are used for power plant and substation operation.

Concerning control systems used to meet constantly fluctuating electricity demand, we have confirmed that date-sensitive information is not employed in any of those systems, and that consequently, there is no danger that power outages or other supply failures will be caused by the Y2K transition.

On the other hand, monitoring & logging functions in both control and business systems use date-sensitive data. Electric power companies have therefore systematically modified programs and replaced microchips as necessary, and carried out simulation tests to confirm operational stability.

Note:

FEPC will operate an emergency headquarters with a staff of 30 during the transition period.

The headquarters will function as a clearinghouse for information regarding the situation at each power company, and will respond to press inquiries.

Situation reports will also be posted on the Internet as needed.
