The "Electricity: The New Millennium" Conference was jointly sponsored by the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPC) and others as an international congress to celebrate the year 2000 and the new millennium. It was held in place of the EEI-FEPC-UNIPEDE International Electricity Chief Executives Summit as the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), and the Union of Electricity Industry - EURELECTRIC decided to hold their annual congresses jointly.

The conference was composed of three General Sessions held on the following themes: "The New Electric Century: What May It Hold?", "A Customer-Driven World: Shaping the New Global Electricity Industry", and "Creating New Paradigms: Competing Forces Converge". There were also forums on critical issues in the electricity industry. Each General Session and Critical Issue Forum featured speeches by electricity chief executives on such topics as liberalization, environmental protection, and technological innovation followed by discussion with participants.

Mr. Hiroji Ota, chairman of the FEPC, and Motohide Sato, president of the Central Research Institute for Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), spoke at Critical Issue Forums on "Mastering Cultural Change" and "The New Electric Century: Technology Based Opportunity", respectively.

At the summit meeting of the FEPC, the EEI, and the Union of Electricity Industry - EURELECTRIC held during the conference, the three organizations released a joint statement recognizing the importance of achieving a reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible supply of electricity; the need for long-term investment; and the necessity of technological development (See Attachment 2).
