Electricity Demand in the First Half of 1999 (Bulletin)

(October 20, 1999)

Demand Overview (Total Across the Ten Power Companies)

Total demand in the first half of 1999 was up 1.0% on last year to 409.7 billion kWh across the ten companies.

1.Residential & Commercial Demand
Residential and commercial demand posted small increases of 2.3% and 1.8% respectively. The increases were relatively modest because although higher temperatures in eastern Japan increased demand for cooling in that region, the rate of increase in western Japan, where summer temperatures were much higher last year, was relatively low.

2.Large Industrial Demand
Demand from large industrial users was down for the fourth consecutive half term, decreasing by 0.7%.

The decline was caused by sluggish performance in all sectors, except the non-ferrous metals and machinery sectors, due to the depressed state of the economy.
