Electricity Demand in October 1999
(Confirmed Report)

Demand for electricity in October was up 3.9% on the same month the previous year to 68.48 billion kWh.

1. Outline by User

Residential & Commercial Demand

Both residential and commercial demand rose, increasing by 7.6% and 3.5% respectively. The rise was due to a longer meter reading period, and relatively higher temperatures in September that led to increased demand for cooling.

Large Industrial Demand

Demand from large industrial users was up for the third consecutive month, increasing by 1.0%. The increase was due to firm performance in all sectors except the cement, textiles and transport machinery sectors. Performance in the steel sector was particularly good.

2. State of the Ten Japanese Power Companies

Residential business results at most of the companies were up due to higher temperatures. Large industrial sector business results also rose in all regions except Chubu, Kansai and Okinawa.

3. Large Industrial Demand

Iron and Steel (up 5.8%): Increased production of crude steel led to a rise of 5.8%.

Chemicals (up 2.4%): Increased production of ethylene and resins led to a rise of 2.4%.

Machinery (down 1.6% overall; electrical up 1.4%, transport down 4.7%) The electrical sector posted a rise of 1.4% due to increased production of electronics and telecommunication devices. The transport machinery sector, however, declined 4.7% due to decreased automobile production. Overall, the machinery sector fell by 1.6%.

Cement (down 3.3%): Reduced production caused by sluggish demand led to a decline of 3.3%.

Non-Ferrous Metals (up 2.1%): Increased copper and aluminium rolling led to a rise of 2.1%.

Paper & Pulp (up 3.6%): Bullish production of printing and office-supply papers led to a rise of 3.6%.

Textiles (down 4.7%): Reflecting a drop in demand for textiles, this sector fell by 4.7%.
