Electricity Demand in November 1999
(Confirmed Report)

Demand for electricity in November was up 0.6% on the same month the previous year to 62.35 billion kWh.

1. Outline by User

Residential & Commercial Demand

Due to a shorter meter reading period and depressed demand for cooling caused by relatively lower temperatures in October, residential demand was down by 2.0% to 17.94 billion kWh and commercial demand rose by only 1.2% to 13.42 billion kWh.

Large Industrial Demand Demand from large industrial users was up for the fourth consecutive month, increasing by 3.3% to 21.53 billion kWh. The increase was due to firm performance in all sectors except the cement and textile sectors. Performance in the steel and electrical machinery sectors were particularly good.

2. State of the Ten Japanese Power Companies

With the exception of Okinawa, large industrial sector business results at all the companies were up on last year, while residential business results were depressed by decreased demand caused by a shorter meter reading period.

3. Large Industrial Demand

Iron and Steel (up 4.7%): Increased production of crude steel led to a rise of 4.7%.

Chemicals (up 2.2%): Increased production of ethylene and caustic soda led to a rise of 2.2%.

Machinery (up 3.8% overall; electrical up 5.4%, transport up 1.9%) The electrical sector posted a rise of 5.4% due to increased production of electronics and communication devices. The transport machinery sector also rose 1.9% due to increased automobile production. Overall, the machinery sector rose 3.8%.

Cement (down 4.8%): Reduced production caused by sluggish demand led to a decline of 4.8%.

Non-Ferrous Metals (up 4.2%): Bullish production of aluminium and copper rolling led to a rise of 4.2%.

Paper & Pulp (up 2.0%): Bullish production of board papers led to a rise of 2.0%.

Textiles (down 1.2%): Reflecting a drop in demand for textiles, this sector fell by 1.2%.
