Electricity Demand in 1999
(Confirmed Report)

Demand for electricity in 1999 was up 2.2% on the previous year to 816.92 billion kWh.

1. Outline by User

Residential & Commercial Demand

Both residential and commercial demand rose, increasing by 3.0% and 2.7% respectively. The increases were due to relatively higher summer temperatures in eastern Japan that led to increased demand for cooling.

Large Industrial Demand

Demand from large industrial users was up for the first time in two years, increasing by 1.4% on last year to 259.73 billion kWh. The increase was due to bullish performance in the steel, paper & pulp and electrical machinery sectors since August, despite poor performance in most sectors in the first half of 1999.

2. State of the Ten Japanese Power Companies

Residential & commercial business results rose in all regions except Okinawa due to higher temperatures in eastern Japan that led to increased demand for cooling. Large industrial business results also rose in all regions except Kansai and Okinawa.

3. Large Industrial Demand

Iron and Steel (up 2.4%): Although demand for crude steel in the first half of 1999 was depressed by prolonged sluggishness in the economy, increased production in the second half led to a rise of 2.4%.

Chemicals (up 0.6%): Although production of ethylene and resins was bullish, sluggish production of caustic soda, coupled with increased use of privately generated power, led to a small rise of 2.7%

Machinery (up 1.2% overall; electrical up 2.9%, transport down 0.4%) The electrical sector posted a firm rise of 2.9% due to increased production of digital household appliances and electronics & communication devices. In the transport machinery sector, despite steady production of some types of automobiles, poor domestic sales resulted in an increase of only 0.4%. Overall, the machinery sector rose 1.2%.

Cement (down 5.9%): Reduced domestic demand, coupled with increased use of privately generated power, led to a decline of 5.9%.

Non-Ferrous Metals (up 2.5%): Although electric cable wire production was down, increased copper and aluminium rolling led to a rise of 2.5%.

Paper & Pulp (up 1.4%): Despite increased use of privately generated power in the first half of 1999, bullish paper production in the second half led to a rise of 1.4%.

Textiles (down4.7%): Reflecting a drop in demand for textiles, this sector fell by 4.7%.

N.B. Figures in parentheses indicate change on last year.
