Electricity Demand in the First Half of 2000 (Bulletin)

(October 18, 2000)

Demand Overview (Total Across the 10 Companies)
○ Total demand in the first half of 2000 was up 3.7% on last year's first half to 424.8 billion kWh across the 10 companies.

○ Demand Excluding Extra High Voltage Demand
Lighting and Commercial demand both posted increases of 3.7%. The increases were due to nationwide higher temperatures in July and August that led to increased demand for cooling. Increases were particularly notable in western Japan, where temperatures were much higher than those of last year's first half.

(Reference) Large Industrial Demand
Demand from large industrial users was up for the second consecutive half term, rising by 4.0%.

The increase resulted from firm performance in most industrial sec5tors, with particularly strong performance being noted in the steel sector.
