Electricity Demand in the First Half of 2000 (Confirmed
Report)
Demand Overview (Total across the 10 Power Companies)
o Demand for electricity in the first half of 2000 was up 3.7% on last
year's first half to 424.81 billion kWh.
o Demand Excluding Extra High Voltage Demand
Lighting Demand (up 3.7%, 124.23 billion kWh)
Commercial Demand (up 3.7%, 82.38 billion kWh)
Commercial and lighting demand both posted increases of 3.7%. The increases
were due to nationwide higher temperatures in July and August that led
to increased demand for cooling. Increases were particularly notable at
companies in western Japan, where temperatures were much higher than those
of last year's first half.
(Reference) Large Industrial Demand (up 4.0%, 135.73 billion kWh)
Demand from large industrial users was up for the second consecutive half
term, rising by 4.0%. The increase resulted from firm performance in most
industrial sectors, with particularly strong performance being noted in
the steel sector.
