Electricity Demand in January 2000 (Confirmed Report)
Demand for electricity in January was up 2.7% on the same month the previous
year to 71.49 billion kWh.
1. Outline by User
Residential & Commercial Demand
Both residential and commercial demand rose, increasing by 3.0% and 2.9%
respectively. The rise was due to a longer meter-reading period, and relatively
higher temperatures in western Japan in December that led to increased
demand for heating.
Large Industrial Demand
Demand from large industrial users was up for the sixth consecutive month,
increasing by 2.6% to 20.39 billion kWh. The increase was due to firm performance
in the steel and electrical machinery sector, despite poor performance
in the chemical, transport machinery, cement and textiles sectors.
2. State of the Ten Japanese Power Companies
Residential & commercial business results at all the companies showed
firm rises. Large industrial business results at all the companies were
up for the second consecutive month.

3. Large Industrial Demand
Iron and Steel (up 10.1%): Increased production of crude steel led to a
firm rise of 10.1%.
Chemicals (down 0.5%): Despite a firm rise of ethylene, decreased production
of resins led to a decline of 0.5%.
Machinery (up 2.4% overall; electrical up 5.6%, transport down 1.4%) The
electrical sector posted a rise of 5.6% due to increased production of
electronics and communication devices. The transport machinery sector,
however, declined 1.4% due to decreased automobile production. Overall,
the machinery sector rose 2.4%.
Cement (down 4.7%): Reduced production caused by sluggish demand led to
a decline of 4.7%.
Non-Ferrous Metals (up 2.2%): Bullish production of aluminium and copper
rolling led to a rise of 2.2%.
Paper & Pulp (up 4.6%): Bullish production of papers led to a rise
of 4.6%. Textiles (down 2.6%): Reflecting a drop in demand for textiles,
this sector fell by 2.6%.
