Electricity Demand in March 2000
(Confirmed Report)
Demand for electricity in March was up 7.4% on the same month the previous
year to 70.08 billion kWh.
1. Outline by User
Residential & Commercial Demand
Both residential and commercial demand rose, increasing by 8.8% and 8.0%
respectively. The increases were due to a longer meter reading period resulting
from the extra leap-year day in February, and relatively lower temperatures
from mid-February to mid-March that led to increased demand for heating.
Large Industrial Demand
Demand from large industrial users was up for the eighth consecutive month,
increasing by 4.9% to 22.18 billion kWh. The increase resulted from firm
performance in the steel, paper & pulp, and electrical machinery sectors
that more than compensated for poor performance in the textile and cement
sectors.
2. State of the Ten Japanese Power Companies
Residential & commercial business results at all the companies showed
firm rises. Large industrial business results also rose in all regions
except Okinawa.

3. Large Industrial Demand
Iron and Steel (up 10.8%): Increased production of crude steel led to a
firm rise of 10.8.
Chemicals (up 5.1%): Although production of ethylene was sluggish, bullish
production of caustic soda and resins, coupled with decreased use of privately
generated power led to a rise of 5.1%.
Machinery (up 4.4% overall; electrical up 5.9%, transport up 2.6%) The
electrical sector posted a firm rise of 5.9% due to increased production
of electronics and communication devices. The transport machinery sector
also rose 2.6% due to increased automobile production. Overall, the machinery
sector rose 4.4%.
Cement (down 1.2%): Reduced domestic demand led to a decline of 1.2%.
Non-Ferrous Metals (up 5.1%): Bullish production of aluminium and copper
rolling led to a rise of 5.1%.
Paper & Pulp (up 9.4%): Bullish production of papers led to a rise
of 9.4%.
Textiles (down 1.5%): Reflecting drop in demand for textiles, this sector
fell by 1.5%.
