Electricity Demand in the Second Half of Fiscal 2001 (Confirmed Report)


Demand Overview (Total across the 10 Power Companies)

o Total demand in 2001 was down 2.3% on last year to 403.78 billion kWh across the 10 companies.

o Demand Excluding Extra High Voltage Demand

Lighting Demand (up 0.4%, 130.91 billion kWh)
Commercial Demand (down 0.2%, 75.40 billion kWh)

Demand excluding extra high voltage demand showed a modest rise, with an increase of 0.4% in lighting demand, and a decrease of 0.2% in commercial demand. The modest results were due to decreased demand for heating caused by higher temperatures in January and subsequent months.

Large industrial user demand in the second half of 2001 was down for the second consecutive half term, declining by 5.4%. The decline was due to generally sluggish industrial production that depressed performance in all sectors, with particularly poor results noted in the steel and the non-ferrous sectors.
