1. Nationwide Summary
Although large industrial user demand continued to be depressed by the
sluggish economy in the first half of 1999, there was a recovery in demand
in the second half of 1999. This, coupled with high summer temperatures
in eastern Japan that contributed increased demand for cooling, led to
a rise of 2.0% across the ten companies to 897.89 billion kWh (up 1.7%
adjusted for leap year).
Breakdown
Hydro
The flow rate, which was 103.9% in 1998, fell to 97.5%. 65.14 billion kWh
were generated, down 6.2% on last year.
Thermal
Increased use of thermal power, coupled with decreased use of hydro and
nuclear power, resulted in a 5.8% rise in thermal generation. 423.99 billion
kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate in 1999 was 83.4%, down 0.4 points on last
year. 309.85 billion kWh were generated, down 0.2% on last year.
2. State of the Companies
Although business results at most of the companies were depressed by sluggish
industrial demand in the first half of 1998, companies in eastern Japan
posted steady rises due to increased demand for cooling caused by high
summer temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 168.664 million kWh (recorded
at 3pm, 4 August), up 0.2% on last year.
Flow Rates
Although flow rates in Hokkaido, Tohoku and Shikoku were above average,
they were below average at most of the companies. The figure across the
nine companies for 1999 was 97.5%.
