1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in the first half of 2000 saw
a rise of 2.9% due to recovery in large industrial user demand, coupled
with increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures. 464.13
billion kWh were generated.
Breakdown
Hydro
The flow rate was down compared to last year's first half, resulting in
a decline of 2.9% to 38.80 billion kWh.
Thermal
Decreased use of hydro and nuclear power, coupled with increased use of
thermal power, resulted in a 3.0% rise in thermal generation. 251 billion
kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last
year's first half, leading to a 1.1% decline to 150.96 billion kWh. Capacity
utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 81.3% and 82.2% respectively (Japan
Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
Business results at most of the companies were bullish due to recovery
in industrial demand. Results at companies in western Japan were particularly
bullish due to higher temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 173.069 million kWh (recorded
at 15:00, 25 August), up 2.6% on last year's first half.
Flow Rates
Poor rainfall during the first half of 2000 (except June) resulted in a
figure of 93.7% across the nine companies.
