1. Nationwide Summary
Fueled by increased demand for heating and firm demand from large industrial
users, total electricity generated and purchased in the second half of
2000 rose by 1.6%. 453.82 billion kWh were generated (up 1.9% adjusted
for leap year).
Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were above that of the previous year's second half, leading
to a rise in hydro generation. 27.66 billion kWh were generated, up 9.8%.
Thermal
Despite increased use of thermal power, the abovementioned rise in hydro
power led to a 0.4% drop in thermal generation. 214.24 billion kWh were
generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last
year, resulting in a 3.6% decline to 151.51 billion kWh. Capacity utilization
rates in 2000 and 1999 were 82.0% and 84.6% respectively (Japan Atomic
Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
Business results at companies in eastern Japan were up due to increased
demand for heating caused by lower winter temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 149.550 million kWh (recorded
at 18:00, 15 January), up 5.3% on the same period last year.
Flow Rates
Despite generally poor rainfall, heavy rains in November in all areas except
Hokkaido and Tohoku resulted in a figure of 102.7% across the nine companies.
