1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in 2000 was up 2.2% across the
ten companies to 453.82billion kWh (up 2.5% adjusted for leap year). The
rise was due to relatively firm demand from large industrial users, and
increased demand for heating and cooling caused by low winter temperatures
in eastern Japan and high summer temperatures nationwide.
Breakdown
Hydro
Although the flow rate was unchanged from last year at 97.4%, increased
use of pumped-storage hydro power resulted in a 2.0% rise in hydro power
generation. 66.47 billion kWh were generated.
Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power resulted in a 1.3% rise in thermal power
generation. 429.34 billion kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate in 2000 was 81.6%, down 1.8 points on last
year. 302.47 billion kWh were generated, down 2.4% on last year. Capacity
utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 81.6% and 83.4% respectively (Japan
Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
Business results at most of the companies were bullish. Companies in eastern
Japan posted particularly firm rises due to increased demand for heating
caused by low winter temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 173.069 million kWh (recorded
at 15:00, 25 August), up 2.6% on last year.
Flow Rates
Although flow rates at companies in eastern Japan were above average, they
were below average at companies in western Japan. The figure across the
nine companies for 2000 was 97.4%.
