Electricity Generated and Purchased in March 2000 (Bulletin)

(2000/4/14)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand for heating due to lower temperatures led to a rise of 4.2% to 76.75 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were well below average, leading to a drop in hydro power generation. 4.26 billion kWh were generated, down 16.3%.

Thermal
Increased use of thermal power, coupled with decreased use of hydro power, resulted in a 6.1% rise in thermal generation. 36.44 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last year, leading to a 4.2% rise to 27.16 billion kWh.

Capacity utilization rates in 1999 and 1998 were 86.3% and 82.9% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies

With the exception of Okinawa, business results were up at all companies due to increased demand for heating resulting from lower temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 135.116 million kWh (recorded at 10:00, 1 March), up 1.3% on last year.

Flow Rates
All companies recorded below-average flow rates due to poor rainfall. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 79.7%.
