Electricity Generated and Purchased in July 2000 (Bulletin)

(2000/8/11)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand from large industrial users, coupled with increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures led to a rise of 7.7% to 87.59 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were well below average, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 6.66 billion kWh were generated, down14.6%.

Thermal
Decreased use of hydro and nuclear power led to a rise of 18.0% in thermal generation. 43.56 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, leading to a 4.3% decline to 26.41 billion kWh. Capacity utilization rate in 2000 and 1999 were 83.9% and 87.7% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies were up for the third consecutive month. Results at companies in western Japan were bullish due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 169.121 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 19 July), up 3.2% on last year.

Flow Rates
Although Hokkaido and Tohoku recorded above-average flow rate due to plentiful rainfall, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below-average. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 87.5%.
