Electricity Generated and Purchased in August 2000 (Bulletin)
(2000/9/14)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand from large industrial users, coupled with increased demand for cooling caused by high temperatures in western Japan, led to a rise of 4.0% to 89.38 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were well below average, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 5.66 billion kWh were generated, down13.0%.

Thermal
Increased use of thermal power, coupled with decreased use of hydro and nuclear power, resulted in a 10% rise in thermal generation. 46.03 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, leading to a 10.3% decline to 25.90 billion kWh. Capacity utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 82.3% and 91.8% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results at companies in western Japan were bullish due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 169.121 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 19 July), up 3.2% on last year. This was the highest figure recorded in the last five years. The highest peak load on record was 171.133 million kWh reached on 25 August 1995.

Flow Rates
Although Hokkaido recorded an above-average flow rate due to plentiful rainfall, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 85.2%.
