Electricity Generated and Purchased in December 2000 (Bulletin)
(2001/1/19)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand from large industrial users, coupled with increased demand for heating caused by low temperatures in eastern Japan, led to a rise of 1.8% to 78.49 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were above average, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 4.32 billion kWh were generated, up 9.1%.

Thermal
Despite of increased use of hydro power, decreased use of nuclear power led to a rise of only 1.2% in thermal generation. 37.66 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, leading to a 6.3% decline to 25.74 billion kWh. Capacity utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 81.8% and 87.3% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies

Although business results at the companies in western Japan were sluggish, companies in eastern Japan posted steady rises due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 141.582 million kWh (recorded at 18:00, 26 December), up 0.1% on last year.

Flow Rates
Poor rainfall nationwide resulted in a figure of 95.2% across the nine companies.
