Electricity Generated and Purchased in@FY2001 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in 2001 was down 1.7% across the ten companies to 902.04 billion kWh. The decline was due to decreased demand for heating in the second half of 2001 caused by higher temperatures in January and subsequent months, and depressed large industrial user demand.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow fates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 64.72 billion kWh were generated, down 2.6%.

Thermal
Overall decline in generated and purchased led to a 4.1% decline in thermal generation. 411.54 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 0.4% decline in nuclear power generation. 301.29 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2001 and 2000 were 80.5% and 81.6% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Okinawa, business results at the rest of the companies declined due to sluggish industrial demand and decreased demand for cooling and heating.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 182.378 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 24 July), up 5.4% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of companies in eastern Japan, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the figure across the nine companies for 2001 was 94.3%.
