Electricity Generated and Purchased in January 2001 (Bulletin)
(2001/2/14)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand for heating caused by low temperatures led to a rise of 6.9% to 81.61 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Although flow rates were lower than for the same period last year, power generation at pumped storage hydro power plants was up, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 4.31 billion kWh were generated, up 4.2%.

Thermal
Overall increased demand, coupled with decreased use of nuclear power, led to a rise of 11.3% to 42.97 billion kWh.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, leading to a 7.8% decline to 23.43 billion kWh. Capacity utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 74.5% and 80.7% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results were up at all companies due to increased demand for heating that resulted from lower temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 149.550 million kWh (recorded at 18:00, 15 January), up 5.3% on last year.

Flow Rates
Although some of the companies recorded below-average flow rates, flow rates across the nine companies were up slightly to 101.7%.
