Electricity Generated and Purchased in February 2001 (Bulletin)

(2001/3/13)

1. Nationwide Summary
Decreased demand for heating caused by higher temperatures in western Japan, coupled with the longer accounting period in February of last year (leap year), led to decline of 0.3% to 74.25 billion kWh across the ten companies (up 0.4% adjusted for leap year).

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were well above average, leading to a rise in hydro generation. 3.84 billion kWh were generated, up 12.2%.

Thermal
Overall decreased demand, coupled with increased use of hydro power, led to a decline of 0.9% to 36.71 billion kWh.

Nuclear
Although the capacity utilization rate was up, the longer accounting period in February of last year (leap year) resulted in a decline of 7.8% decline to 23.43 billion kWh. Capacity utilization rates in 2000 and 1999 were 81.8% and 79.1% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Hokkaido, business results at the rest of the companies were down.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 144.185 million kWh (recorded at 11:00, 13 February), up 2.4% on last year.

Flow Rates
Plentiful rainfall nationwide resulted in a figure of 96.4% across the nine companies.
