Electricity Generated and Purchased in July 2001 (Bulletin)
(2001/8/13)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures led to a rise of 3.1% to 90.32 billion kWh across the ten companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were above average, leading to a rise in hydro power generation.
6.97 billion kWh were generated, up 4.6%.

Thermal
Increased use of thermal power, coupled with decreased use of nuclear power, resulted in a 5.3% rise in thermal generation. 45.86 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, leading to a 3.0% decline to 25.63 billion kWh.

Capacity utilization rates in 2001 and 2000 were 80.8% and 83.9% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies

Business results at most of the companies were bullish due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 182.378 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 24 July), up 7.8% on last year. This was the highest figure ever recorded, and represented an increase of 5.4% over the previous record high of 173.069 million kWh (recorded on 25 August 2000).

Flow Rates
Although Hokkaido and Chugoku recorded above-average flow rates, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 89.0%.
