Electricity Generated and Purchased in August 2001 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Depressed demand from large industrial users, coupled with decreased demand
for cooling caused by lower temperatures led to a decline of 0.5% to 84.87
billion kWh across the ten companies.
Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were below average, leading to a decline in hydro power generation.
5.51 billion kWh were generated, up 2.7%.
Thermal
Decreased use of thermal power, coupled with increased use of nuclear power,
resulted in an 11.4% decline in thermal generation. 40.77 billion kWh were
generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last
year, leading to a 3.8% rise to 26.88 billion kWh.
Capacity utilization rates in 2001 and 2000 were 84.0% and 82.3% respectively
(Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
Business results at the companies in eastern Japan were sluggish due to
decreased demand for cooling caused by lower temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 178.246 million kWh (recorded
at 15:00, 1 August), up 3.0% on last year.
Flow Rates
With the exception of Hokkaido, all companies, especially those in western
Japan, recorded below average flow rates. As a result, the flow rate across
the nine companies was 80.0%.
