Electricity Generated and Purchased in September 2001 (Bulletin)
i2001/10/12j

1. Nationwide Summary
Depressed demand from large industrial users, coupled with decreased demand for cooling caused by lower temperatures, led to a decline of 5.7% across the ten companies. 73.65 billion kWh were generated.

Breakdown

Hydro
Below-average flow rates led to a decline in hydro power generation. 5.43 billion kWh were generated, down 2.5%.

Thermal
The downtrend in generated and purchased results, coupled with increased use of nuclear power, resulted in a 13.2% decline in thermal generation. 33.47 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last year, leading to a 5.4% rise to 24.11 billion kWh.

Capacity utilization rates in 2001 and 2000 were 78.5% and 75.2% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results at most of the companies were sluggish due to decreased demand for cooling caused by lower temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 148.577 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 18 September), down 1.6% on last year.

Flow Rates
Although companies in eastern Japan recorded above-average rainfall, flow rates at companies in western Japan were well below average. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 91.3%.
