Electricity Generated and Purchased in the First Half of FY2002 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures in August and September led to a rise of 0.3% to 460.82 billion kWh across the 10 companies.

Breakdown

Hydro
The flow rate was up compared to last year’s first half, resulting in an increase of 2.3% to 38.50 billion kWh.

Thermal
Increased use of hydro and nuclear power led to a 5.1% decline in thermal generation. 199.7 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last year’ s first half, resulting in a 5.6% rise in nuclear power generation. 159.83 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 84.4% and 81.0% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies

With the exception of Kansai, Kyushu and Okinawa, business results at the rest of the companies were bullish, due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures in August and September.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 179.544 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 1 August), down 1.6% on last year’s first half.

Flow Rates
Flow rates at all the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 89.9%.
