Electricity Generated and Purchased in the Second Half of 2002 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in the second half of 2002 was
up by 4.5%. The rise was due to increased demand for heating caused by
higher temperatures, and increased large industrial user demand. 462.62
billion kWh were generated.
Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were below that of the previous year's second half, leading to a drop in hydro generation. 24.80 billion kWh were generated, down 8.5%.
Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 22.7% increase in thermal generation.
246.58 billion kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 22.8% decline to 115.68 billion kWh.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 61.4% and 80.0% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
Business results at all companies rose due to bullish industrial demand
and increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 149. 291 million kWh (recorded
at 18:00, 29 January), up 5.2% on the same period last year.
Flow Rates
With the exception of Tohoku and Tokyo, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the figure across the nine companies was 96.6%.
