Electricity Generated and Purchased in　FY2002 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in 2002 was up 2.4% across the ten companies to 923.56 billion kWh. The increase was due to increased demand for cooling in the first half of 2002 caused by higher temperatures in August and September, and increased demand for heating in the second half of 2002 caused by lower temperature, and increased large industrial user demand.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow fates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 63.29 billion kWh were generated, down 2.2%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to an 8.5% increase in thermal generation. 446.47 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in an 8.6% decline in nuclear power generation. 275.51 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 72.9% and 80.5% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Okinawa, business results at the rest of the companies rose due to increased demand for heating and cooling, and increased industrial demand.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 179.544 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 1 August), down 1.6% on last year.

Flow Rates
Flow rates at all the companies were below average. As a result, the figure across the nine companies for 2002 was 92.6%.
