Electricity Generated and Purchased in July 2002 (Bulletin)
1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in July was down for the twelfth
consecutive month, falling by 1.3%. The decline was due to decreased demand
for cooling caused by lower temperatures. 89.15 billion kWh were generated.
Breakdown
Hydro
Flow fates were above those of last year, leading to an increase in hydro
power generation. 7.68 billion kWh were generated, up 10.1%.
Thermal
Overall decline in generated and purchased, coupled with increased use
of hydro and nuclear power led to an 11.3% decline in thermal generation.
40.69 billion kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last
year, resulting in a 9.1% rise in nuclear power generation. 27.96 billion
kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 87.1% and 80.8% respectively
(Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Hokkaido and Chugoku, business results at the rest
of the companies declined due to decreased demand for cooling caused by
lower temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 176.378 million kWh (recorded
at 15:00, 31 July), down 3.3% on last year.
Flow Rates Although Hokkaido and Chugoku recorded below-average flow rate,
rates at the rest of the companies were above average. As a result, the
flow rate across the 9 companies was 102.2%.
