Electricity Generated and Purchased in August 2002 (Bulletin)



1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in August was up for the first time in thirteen months, increasing by 3.3%. The increase was due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures in eastern Japan. 87.64 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown

Hydro
Flow fates were above those of last year, leading to an increase in hydro power generation. 6.13 billion kWh were generated, up 11.2%.

Thermal
Increased use of hydro and nuclear power led to a 2.6% decline in thermal generation. 39.7 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was up compared to last year, resulting in a 9.4% rise in nuclear power generation. 29.42 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 91.7% and 84.0% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies

Business results at Tohoku, Tokyo, Chubu, Hokuriku and Chugoku were bullish due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures in eastern Japan.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 179.544 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 1 August), up 0.7% on last year.

Flow Rates
Although Hokkaido and Tohoku recorded above-average flow rate, rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 88.6%.
