Electricity Generated and Purchased in September 2002 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in September was up 3.4%, due
to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures. 76.18 billion
kWh were generated.
Breakdown
Hydro Flow fates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in
hydro power generation. 4.37 billion kWh were generated, down 19.5%.
Thermal
Decreased use of hydro and nuclear power led to a 9.7% increase in thermal
generation. 36.72 billion kWh were generated.
Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last
year, resulting in a 1.4% decline in nuclear power generation. 23.77 billion
kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 76.6% and 78.5% respectively
(Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).
2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Okinawa, business results at all the companies were
bullish due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures.
Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 1693.35 million kWh (recorded
at 15:00, 3 September), up 14.0% on last year.
Flow Rates
Flow rates at most of the companies were well below average. As a result,
the flow rate across the 9 companies was 67.3%.
