i2002^11^15j

1. Nationwide Summary

Increased demand from large industrial users led to a rise of 2.3% to 71.91 billion kWh across the 10 companies.

Breakdown
Hydro Flow fates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 4.15 billion kWh were generated, down 10.2%.

Thermal
Decreased use of hydro and nuclear power led to an 11.4% increase in thermal generation. 35.46 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 10.2% decline in nuclear power generation. 21.36 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 66.6% and 74.4% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies

With the exception of Okinawa, business results at all the companies were bullish due to recovery in industrial demand.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 130.855 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 4 October), down 13.8% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of Hokkaido, Tohoku and Tokyo, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average due to poor rainfall in western Japan. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 86.2%.
