1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in November was up 5.0%, due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures. 73.96 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Although flow rates were higher than previous year, power generation at pumped storage hydro power plants was down, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 4.00 billion kWh were generated, down 0.9%.

Thermal Decreased use of hydro and nuclear power led to a 22.1% increase in thermal generation. 39.26 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 20.0% decline in nuclear power generation. 20.14 billion kWh were generated.

Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 64.8% and 82.2% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies were bullish due to increased demand for heating that resulted from lower temperatures nationwide.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 133.086 million kWh (recorded at 18:00, 27 November), up 2.2% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of Hokkaido, Tohoku and Hokuriku, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average due to poor rainfall in western Japan. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 99.2%.
