(2003/3/14)

1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in February was up 3.5%, due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures. 74.48 billion kWh were generated.

Breakdown
Hydro
Although flow rates were above those of last year, power generation at pumped storage hydro power plants was down, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 3.80 billion kWh were generated, down 7.1%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 19.7% increase in thermal generation. 40.84 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 25.1% decline in nuclear power generation. 16.34 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 56.4% and 75.2% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies rose due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures.
