1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in March was up 7.6%, due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures. 78.65 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 4.95 billion kWh were generated, down 13.7%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 44.3% increase in thermal generation. 42.74 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 34.2% decline in nuclear power generation. 18.31 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 57.1% and 86.8% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies rose due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 138.426 million kWh (recorded at 19:00, 4 March), up 5.8% on last year.

Flow Rates
Below-average rainfall in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku and Kyushu resulted in a flow rate of 95.6% across the 9 companies.
