Electricity Generated and Purchased in May 2003 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in May was up 1.5%, due to increased large industrial user demand. 69.76 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were above those of last year, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 8.13 billion kWh were generated, up 3.7%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 42.6% increase in thermal generation. 36.19 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 52.1% decline in nuclear power generation. 12.91 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2003 and 2002 were 40.2% and 84.0% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Okinawa, business results at all the companies rose due to increased industrial demand.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 124.734 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 29 May), up 1.7% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of Hokkaido, all companies recorded above- average flow rates. As a result, the flow rate across the nine companies was 108.5%.
