Electricity Generated and Purchased in June 2003 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in June was up 1.6%, due to increased demand for cooling caused by higher temperatures in Eastern Japan in the second half of June. 72.99 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were above those of last year, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 7.17 billion kWh were generated, up 31.9%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 24.4% increase in thermal generation. 39.27 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 46.1% decline in nuclear power generation. 13.69 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2003 and 2002 were 44.1% and 81.9% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
Business results at Hokkaido, Tohoku, Tokyo, Chubu, Hokuriku and Kansai rose due to increased demand for heating caused by higher temperatures in the second half of June.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 140.539 million kWh (recorded at 15:00, 20 June), up 1.2% on last year.

Flow Rates
Below-average rainfall in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Tokyo and Hokuriku resulted in a flow rate of 99.6% across the nine companies.
