Electricity Generated and Purchased in August 2003 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in August was down 4.4%, due to decreased demand for cooling caused by lower temperatures nationwide. 83.75 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were above those of last year, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 8.09 billion kWh were generated, up 32.0%.
Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 6.0 rise in thermal generation. 42.06 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 33.2% decline in nuclear power generation. 19.64 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2003 and 2002 were 61.2% and 91.7% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Hokkaido, Kyushu and Okinawa, business results at all companies declined due to decreased demand for cooling caused by lower temperatures nationwide.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 167.280 million kWh (recorded at 14:00, 5 August), down 6.8% on last year.

Flow Rates
Plentiful rainfall nationwide resulted in a flow rate of 135.8% across the nine companies..
