Electricity Generated and Purchased in the Second Half of FY2001 (Bulletin)


1. Nationwide Summary
Total electricity generated and purchased in the second half of 2001 was down by 2.5%. The decline was due to decreased demand for heating caused by higher temperatures in January and subsequent months, and depressed large industrial user demand. 442.49 billion kWh were generated.

Breakdown

Hydro
Flow rates were below that of the previous year's second half, leading to a drop in hydro generation. 27.09 billion kWh were generated, down 2.1%.

Thermal
Overall decline in generated and purchased led to a 6.2% decline in thermal generation. 200.94 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 1.1% decline to 149.87 billion kWh.

Capacity utilization rates in 2001 and 2000 were 80.0% and 82.0% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).

2. State of the Companies
With the exception of Okinawa, business results at the rest of the companies declined due to sluggish industrial demand and decreased demand for heating caused by higher temperatures in January and subsequent months.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the ten companies was 141.975 million kWh (recorded at 17:00, 21 December), down 5.1% on the same period last year.

Flow Rates
Despite generally poor rainfall in November and December, plentiful rainfall nationwide in subsequent months resulted in a figure of 101.7% across the nine companies.
