1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in December was up 3.1%, due to increased large industrial user demand. 80.60 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were above those of last year, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 4.09 billion kWh were generated, up 5.2%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to an 19.1% increase in thermal generation. 42.68 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 23.4% decline in nuclear power generation. 20.74 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 64.6% and 85.4% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies were bullish due to increased industrial demand.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 144.553 million kWh (recorded at 18:00, 10 December), up 1.8% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of Tohoku, Hokuriku, Shikoku and Kyushu, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 98.6%.
