1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in 2003 was down 1.1% across the ten companies to 913.60 billion kWh. The decline was due to decreased demand for heating in summer caused by higher temperatures, and decreased demand for heating in winter caused by lower temperature (down 1.4%adjusted for leap year).

(Breakdown)

Hydro Flow fates were above those of last year, leading to a rise in hydro power generation. 72.39 billion kWh were generated, up 14.4%.
Thermal Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 4.4% increase in thermal generation. 465.94 billion kWh were generated.
Nuclear The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 20.0% decline in nuclear power generation. 220.53 billion kWh were generated.
(Capacity utilization rates in 2003 and 2002 were 58.2% and 72.9% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).)

2. State of the Companies

Business results in Tokyo, Chubu, Kansai, Chugoku and Shikoku declined due to decreased demand for heating and cooling caused by mild temperatures in winter and summer.

[ Monthly Peak Load ]

Combined peak load for the ten companies was 167.280 million kWh (recorded at 14:00, 5 August), down 6.8% on last year.

[ Flow Rates ]

With the exception of Hokkaido, flow rates at all the companies were above average. As a result, the figure across the nine companies for 2003 was 108.8%.
