Electricity Generated and Purchased in January 2003 (Bulletin)

1. Nationwide Summary

Total electricity generated and purchased in January was up 5.7%, due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures and increased large industrial user demand. 82.48 billion kWh were generated.


Breakdown
Hydro
Flow rates were below those of last year, leading to a decline in hydro power generation. 3.80 billion kWh were generated, down 12.6%.

Thermal
Decreased use of nuclear power led to a 22.1% increase in thermal generation. 45.11 billion kWh were generated.

Nuclear
The capacity utilization rate at all companies was down compared to last year, resulting in a 22.2% decline in nuclear power generation. 18.80 billion kWh were generated.
Capacity utilization rates in 2002 and 2001 were 58.6% and 75.3% respectively (Japan Atomic Power Company figures excluded).


2. State of the Companies
Business results at all the companies rose due to increased demand for heating caused by lower temperatures, and bullish industrial demand.

Monthly Peak Load
Combined peak load for the 10 companies was 149.291 million kW (recorded at 18:00, 29 January), up 7.2% on last year.

Flow Rates
With the exception of Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kansai and Shikoku, flow rates at the rest of the companies were below average. As a result, the flow rate across the 9 companies was 98.7%.
