Comments on the Cabinet Decision on the Bill Concerning Formation of a Nuclear Damage Compensation Support Organization

June  14,  2011
Makoto Yagi, FEPC Chairman

A bill concerning Formation of a Nuclear Damage Compensation Support Organization was decided by the Cabinet today.

FEPC recognizes the great importance of this bill for ensuring prompt and proper compensation to those who have suffered damage and for helping Tokyo Electric Power Company maintain a stable supply of electricity.

Nevertheless, the compensation framework should be acceptable to both the customers and shareholders of electric power companies. Accordingly, we submitted a petition to the Japanese government on May 18.

We believe that the bill decided by the Cabinet today reflects the discussions held within the government, including discussions on the requests we have made. Nevertheless, we hope that our requests will be given greater prominence and acted upon quickly during further discussions in the Diet and in the actual design of the framework.
