The status of assistance by electric power companies in the Fukushima area (revised on December 5)

 Led by the Fukushima Support Headquarters which was set up by FEPC on April 15, the electric power companies are providing manpower assistance as well as supplies in the Fukushima area and around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

 

The main activities to date are as follows.

 

○ Manpower assistance

 Presently, the power companies are conducting activities such as screening for radioactive contamination (*1) and monitoring environmental radiation (*2) in collaboration with TEPCO and the central and local governments, led by the Fukushima Support Headquarters.

 

Actual activities are as follows:

  • ・Radioactive contamination screening of the human body and belongings of residents of the 20km No-Entry Zone upon returning from temporary visits or bringing back their cars
  • ・Daily radioactive contamination screening of residents and vehicles at the Iwaki City Public Health Center and Minami Soma City Soso Public Health Center
  • ・Environmental radiation monitoring in all of Fukushima Prefecture: at six locations daily outside the 20km No-Entry Zone and at about fifty locations weekly inside the 20km No-Entry Zone 
  • ・Cooperation in radionuclide analyses conducted in a prefectural laboratory of Fukushima

*2 Environmental radiation monitoring: Periodic measurement of the amount of radiation in the environment

○ Provision of supplies

 Led by the Fukushima Support Headquarters, the power companies have been providing supplies such as radiation protection suits, masks, and radiation measuring devices for the recovery work at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

 The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan established the Fukushima Support Headquarters as of April 15, 2011, as follows.

 

  1. 1.Title: Fukushima Support Headquarters
  2. 2.Objective: To strengthen support for on-site activities in the Fukushima region, which have been carried  out individually by the FEPC and each electric power company so far, and to resolve the medium- to long-term technical problems regarding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of TEPCO.
  3. 3.Activities: The Fukushima Support Headquarters shall carry out the following activities in close       cooperation with TEPCO:
  • ・Provide physical support in the Fukushima region and also provide materials and equipment for   the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of TEPCO, as on-site support activities.
  • ・Provide assistance by conducting research and development as required on the medium- to long-term   technical problems of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of TEPCO (e.g. waste treatment and   disposal).
