Today, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ryosei Akazawa announced that a literature survey of Minamitorishima (Ogasawara Village, Tokyo Prefecture) will be conducted at the government's responsibility and judgement.
Since the national government requested that a literature survey be conducted on March 3, 2026, Ogasawara Village has been diligently working on the final disposal project through events such as the Village residents’ briefing session. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and respect for the Ogasawara Village Mayor and everyone in the community.
We ask that the government and Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO) give due consideration to the Ogasawara Village Mayor's requests, which reflect the opinions of the Village community, and continue to work sincerely when conducting the literature survey.
The final disposal project is an important challenge that Japan as a whole to continue to discuss.
To identify scientifically suitable disposal sites, surveys must be conducted across multiple locations in Japan, and expanding the number of survey sites is highly valuable.
As the parties fundamentally responsible for generating specified radioactive waste, we nuclear operators, will cooperate with the government and NUMO to foster public interest and understanding through dialogue with the local community.
