The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan
Chairman Nozomu Mori
Today, the Mayor of Hitachiomiya City in Ibaraki Prefecture announced the city's intent to accept a literature survey for the final disposal of specific radioactive waste.
It is my understanding that various views on the final disposal project has been raised in Hitachiomiya City in forums such as the city council since the national government made a request to implement a literature survey in August 31, 2026. I want to express my deepest gratitude and respect to the Mayor of Hitachiomiya City and the people of the local community for its sincere consideration of the final disposal project.
We ask that the government and Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO) give due consideration to the Hitachiomiya City Mayor's requests, which reflect the opinions of the local community, and continue to work sincerely when conducting the literature survey.
The final disposal project is an important challenge that Japan as a whole need to continue to discuss. To identify scientifically suitable disposal sites, surveys must be conducted across multiple locations in Japan, and this opportunity to expand the number of survey sites is highly meaningful.
As the parties fundamentally responsible for generating specified radioactive waste, we, nuclear operators, will cooperate with the government and NUMO to foster public interest and understanding of final disposal by engaging in dialogue with lWocal communities.
