Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy

Japan has a solid, long-term record of adhering to its policy of the peaceful use of nuclear energy. IAEA stated that all the nuclear materials in Japan are protected under IAEA safeguards and are not being diverted to the manufacture of nuclear weapons.

Safeguard System

Under the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), all nuclear facilities in Japan receive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as the Japanese government to ensure that nuclear energy is only used for peaceful purposes.

International Recognition of Japan's Nuclear Program

At the IAEA General Conference in 2004, a statement that Japan has become the first country to quality for integrated safeguards was presented. Following the statement, the integrated safeguards were introduced to Japan on September 15, 2004. This is expected to smoothly promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and particularly nuclear fuel cycle projects.
